In 1970, Július Koller introduced the three-letter concept U.F.O. to his work, accompanying it with a manifesto. In this manifesto—from which a substantial part of Koller’s oeuvre was later to develop—the pseudo-science of extra-terrestrial flying objects became a medium for communicating his individual engagement in shaping cultural situations. Long-standing “operations” and “cultural” situations were oriented toward the future, whilst simultaneously passing comment on the present. During the period of so-called “Normalization” (1972-1989) Koller’s performative designation worked against the general passivity within society. With U.F.O., a complex reference and relationship system arises between the representation and the possibility of its mutation. In various works, each letter stands for notions and ideas that could be further imagined. D.G.
