Peter Kubelka
Peter Kubelka, Vienna, 4 May 2022
On the “Value of Illiterate Knowledge”
“Filmmaker, theoretician, cook, architect, musician, curator, and cofounder of the Anthology Film Archives” in New York (as well as, later on, the Austrian Film Museum in Vienna): as early as a 1966 interview with Jonas Mekas, Peter Kubelka presented himself as one who refused to be an expert. And his statement back then, “I want to help mankind to grow,” was one that he wouldn’t formulate in the same way today. But in the kitchen of his Viennese apartment, surrounded by exemplars from his idiosyncratic collection of historical artworks, he continues to present himself as a multifariously well-versed philanthropist and skeptic.
In cooperation with the Austrian daily newspaper “Der Standard”, this Kontakt Video Portrait was published on their website www.derstandard.at on 17 March 2024.
