Konstruktionszeichnung zur Kinetischen Plastik
/1
In its reduction and clarity, Marc Adrian’s “Kinetic Sculpture” of 1958 shows almost paradigmatically that abandonment of statically conceived sculpture in favor of kinetic objects developing in space-time, objects in which illusionary space and motion are related to perception; in this respect, overall Viennese output from this period contained virtually no parallels to Adrian’s works. In a way that is most certainly ironic, this mobile also plays with the formal inventories of a genre-transformation: with the empty picture frames and the easel, which holds their formats. It hence also stands in tongue-and-cheek opposition to the pure formalisms of late-modernist abstraction. G.S.
