The movie “Straight Line (Stevens – Duke)”, is the first from the trilogy of Tomislav Gotovac's structuralist movies dedicated to Duke Ellington (whose music represents the sound background of the movie) and the director George Stevens (The other two are “Blue Rider (Godar – Art)”, and “Circle (Jutkevich – Count)”. “Straight Line” consists of a single scene shot from one camera position using a wide-angle lens which reveals a view through the window of a tram and is conditioned by the movement of the tram. The movie is based on a rigid structure, reduced action and repetition whereas the purity of the form is complemented by the “arrested” case which incorporates in the film all events on the street happening along the tram rails.
