The work “Bosnian Girl” is a self portrait of the artist herself, overwritten with graffiti written by an unknown Dutch soldier from a wall of the army barracks in Potocari / Srebrenica.
“No teeth…?
A mustache …?
Smel like shit …?
BOSNIAN GIRL!”
As a part of the UNPROFOR Dutch soldiers were responsible for protecting theSrebrenica safe area. The comment on the wall reflects the raw war reality in which the discrimination and stigmatization of the helpless citizens were part of everyday life. The dramatic process of finding new identities, contradictory political and social systems has opened the place for inhumanity, racist attitudes and forms of “trivial behaviorism”. Even though the work deals with a very sensitive topic, the high aestheticization of the work amplifies the principle of the cross reference to social symbols. A.B.
