From the contemplative level of the radiograms of the circle, Běla Kolářová continued towards other photographic experiments in which she manipulated various objects and templates in the darkroom, creating dynamic and ornamental light drawings. This was probably the most open reflection of her internal, expressive stream of imagination, something which she otherwise strictly controlled and confronted with her essentially organized nature. Around the same time (1963–1964), this drove her to photograph specific installations of objects that were essentially ephemeral. Again, she worked with found materials that are normally not of interest to art, materials like hair, egg or nut shells, hooks, metal spirals, and the like. She organized them into regular sets of “samplers,” in which the photographs repetitively featured motifs embodied by letters, the alphabet, or references to literary inspiration. M.Kl.
