In this performance at the Museum of Modern Art in Zagreb, Slaven Tolj—naked and representing a stag with antlers on his head—spent several minutes fighting against his shadow on the wall until his antlers broke. These antlers had come down to Tolj from his grandfather, who had stolen them during the Second World War from a collection of gifts meant for Mussolini. Tolj’s performance refers to Yugoslavia’s disintegration and the rise of nationalism in Croatia. W.S.
