Tramschleife

The work “Tramschleife” [Streetcar Loop] was meant to be an additional commission for the Erste Campus art in architecture project. In close proximity to the Belvedere, a palace that is now museum of historical significance, the artist sought to create a reference to the golden treasures of monarchic times. He selected a peripheral zone: the terminus of a streetcar line where the tracks do a loop to turn the rolling stock around. This was also the place where the planning office for the new Erste Campus was temporarily located; this office was originally supposed to be taken over by the Belvedere later on, but this did not come to pass. The drawings show the site surrounded by a golden fence made from materials relating to the artist’s wooden hut for the work “Laubreise,” which was realized next to it. This fence would have consisted of wooden boards 20 cm in width placed next to each other with 4 cm in between. Instead of enclosing nature, the artist thereby sought to circumvent culture as represented by the Belvedere. W.S.
