Liberation from Knowledge
/1
Mladen Stilinović’s artist’s book “Liberation from Knowledge” refers to a clarity of thought or pure sense of visuality and sensuality with the Croatian phrase “svjestan bjeline”—which translates as “consciously white”—written on each page. In addition to this penciled phrase, each page also features a different geometric shape or word applied with a glossy white marker that is barely visible. The Croatian word “Odsutan” (“absent”) underscores the fleeting quality of these drawn elements, whose absence of color symbolizes the freedom of the mind. The tautological combination of sign and text links linguistic form and linguistic meaning by way of a visual identity achieved via a hand-written and hand-drawn logic of simplicity. W.S.
