Over the course of time, the simplicity of Mladen Stilinović’s artist’s books grew more marked and the structure more precise. In general, they were written in pencil on A4-format bank post paper and stapled together. And most commonly, a few words or a single sentence would be threaded through the entire book. “Sad/Now” is a book containing one word that the artist attempted to transform by means of various operations such as bolding it, deleting, crossing, burning, or numbering the letters, and so on, while the addition of the suffix -nica was used to effectively cancel out the word in favor of a new one: “sadnica” – seedling.
