“Extended Portraits,” the title she gave one of her series, programmatically takes up the themes of fragmented identities and of precarious relations between private and public. Cora Pongracz photographed eight women from her circle of friends, asking each of her sitters to name additional motifs as “extensions” of their person. But Pongracz does not take a theatrical approach, neither to her subjects nor to the camera. Sensitively distant but very much present, she establishes an intuitive field within which, with the highest photographic professionalism, she gives free reign to an interplay between photography, photographer and sitter that is both critical and enriched with irony and melancholy.
