Marx i Stilinović
/5
The work consists of the velvet covers with three inserted black-and-white photos showing the artist’s face covered with coins, and a sheet of paper with Karl Marx’s quote from "Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts" of 1844, “Money:”
“The difference between effective demand based on money and ineffective demand based on my need, my passion, my wish, etc., is the difference between being and thinking, between that which exists within me merely as an idea and the idea which exists as a real object outside of me.”
Is the mask made of money used for hiding the identity of the artist or is the artist losing his identity under the pressure of money? Sven Stilinović frequently juxtaposes the photographs of his face or body and the texts of anarchistic thinkers, as well as Marx, who is used here to facilitate the understanding that money and economy overlap in the subject of the artist. The artist himself has said: “I hate money because it does not give me the opportunity to express and act freely.” B.S.
