The artist books of Mladen Stilinović were written in pencil on A4 pages and stapled. An interest in language framed the foundation of these first works: primarily, language in relation to the visual sign. The first collages were very simple, including poetic speech, political and everyday expressions. On the whole, there were visual and linguistic interventions in the initial application. Frequently, Stilinović wrote a few words, or a single sentence thread throughout an entire book. His somewhat undeveloped handwriting was also a particular visual feature. The book “Have a Look 1” works with just a minimum of words, signs and materials. While the words were used visually and as signs, sometimes they manipulate the meaning of the picture, put emphasis on parts of the reading or create a dissonance among the elements. B.S.
