Conceptual artist Goran Trbuljak started his dialogue on the topic of painting with street actions entitled "Painting on Glass (Sunday Painting)." On Sundays he would paint anonymously on the shopping window of a shop selling art supplies in front of an empty canvass placed on the easel. With this ironic gesture he continued his sceptical questioning of art by expressing his rejection of noncritical painting. The result of this humorous simulation of painting lasted only until the moment when the salesperson cleaned the shopping window. The image would be lost and all that would remain would be a photographed event communicated via photographic documentation. The work mocks at specific conventional assumptions about painting, art materials and tools. Among other things, the artist was interested in the transitory nature that he observes in the painting. The painting should not be an aesthetically unique object, its function is to raise the issue of the art and the artist is the one mediating between and manipulating with the signs. B.S.
