"Publikum als Exponat" [Audience as Exhibit] was part of the exhibition multi media 1, which took place at Vienna’s Galerie junge Generation [Young Generation Gallery] on 10 and 11 April, 1969. The visitors were interviewed using a video recording system made available by Philips. Thereafter, the interviews were available for viewing on two monitors in the gallery, being replayed several times in response to the attendees’ requests. This work focused above all on experimentation with the elements involved in the video-making process such as scanner, electron gun, scanner lens, light collecting system, photomultiplier tube, amplifier and, finally, the video signal itself, hence relating art to the technological phenomena of everyday life. Weibel thus anticipated something that was to become a common technical process later on, a process that media artists explored from its very beginnings. W.S.
