"Mailbox" by Roman Ondak recalls memories of the former Eastern Bloc. Ondak’s work consists of a large map of Eastern Europe from before 1989. On this map is mounted an improvised mailbox that Ondak’s father had built from a sawed-off, hollow guardrail post and used in place of a true mailbox up into the 1990s. With its quiet wit, this work conveys the inspirational wealth and unbroken will to communicate that persists regardless of national borders or political systems. K.R.
