This acrylic painting on cardboard represents one of the many scenes from the concentration camps in which Ceija Stojka was imprisoned beginning at age ten. The vast open field with its uniform trees fenced off by barbed wire denotes the isolation and oppressive atmosphere as well as the emptiness of everyday camp life, a representation that is supported by somber, monotone colors. Stojka’s take on the hidden forces inside the camps—forces invisible from without—emphatically articulates themes of Roma art such as the ongoing quest for liberation from hegemonic power structures, inequality, and discrimination.
