Circular transformation of a unit of structure - Circular transformation of the whole structure

Boris Demur’s work “Circular transformation of a unit of structure – Circular transformation of the whole structure” anticipates the interest that he showed in the phenomena of circles and spirals in his later oeuvre. This 35-part analog photographic work is situated in the tradition of 1970s conceptual photography, which was concerned with geometric transformations achieved via simple methods of creating shapes and shadows. For these black-and-white photos, Demur used sugar cubes—which, in their whiteness, embody small elements that seem to become colossal objects in space when zoomed in on by a photographic lens. The rhythmic and repetitive gesture of the cubes poses questions about the multiplicity of their usages and the different constellations ranging from simple lines to interlocked combinations or individual heaps of geometrically varied gestalt. Moments of minimal art evolve here as does the processuality of the actions manifested in the sugar cubes’ varying positions as protagonists in precomposed arrangements. W.S.
