Kunsthaus
/1
This four-part photo series is an early work voicing institutional critique from a gendered perspective. It shows the artist with a transparent plastic bag bearing the inscription “Kunsthaus” (House for the Arts)—a typical bag of the sort produced by arts institutions for their self-promotion—placed over her head. In this sequence of images, the artist seems to struggle with the bag and almost suffocate, all the while being exposed to the onlooker as her eyes are partly concealed behind the bag’s black lettering.
