This “shredded dollar object” assembles a variety of shredded dollar bills to form an assemblage in the literal sense of a tableau vivant. The banknotes are mounted upon a cardboard square equipped with a metal clip. The dollar as a symbol of freedom and the liberating spirit of the United States became a frequently used trope in Jehle’s work during the late 1960s, in keeping with the spirit of that era’s Nouveau Realism and Pop-Art.
