After settling in Philadelphia (USA) in 1972, Roman Cotoșman extended his explorations in geometrical abstraction into a series of drawings guided by the principles of game theory and chance operations. Neo-concrete constellations had become his central focus, capturing the sensual dynamic tensions existing in a composition starting from the presupposition that there is no actual “center,” but a “non-center.” This means that the organization of forms on the surface was done according to a free movement based on the probability of strings. The cycles of drawings “Tensional Games” (1970–1975/76), “Rhythmic Impulses” (1975–1976), “Discontinuous Cycle” (1976), “Parallel Differences” (1977), and “Decentered Games” (1979–1980) evoke a visual grammar that advanced a new principle in structuring the field of representation according to a systematic decentering process that annulled the concepts of periphery and center. The established configurations are constructed starting from their internal tensions, from the random associations obtained, all of which remained intentionally unresolved, further nurturing the impulse of creation and the testing of new arrangements. The research of simplicity is done via the repetition and abridgment of forms and of their relationships in space, leaving the dialogue open. A.Se.
