Nature as Partner (Făget)
/8
Known for his pioneering work in the renewal of art pedagogy during Romania’s socialist era via the implementation of an experimental curriculum at the Timișoara Art High School (1970–1974) that was akin to that of the Bauhaus program for teaching the creation of designs and architectural studies, Constantin Flondor in fact succeeded in reforming artistic education and its teaching methods. He considered research to be an integral part of any artistic endeavor. And in this context, both teacher and student were equal partners in a dialogue whose aim was not to convey information but to raise issues and questions relevant to the construction of form and its meaning. Art was indeed a way of knowing and understanding reality. And Flondor’s experiments, conducted with students during summer workshops, established a new set of objectives. There, the artist tested nature’s potential to become co-partner in the genesis of a form or of an event. On the hills near Făget, the students attempted to establish communication with key elements of nature (movement, air, sun), employing various natural and artificial materials such as metallized foils, mirrors, paddles, and thin fabrics in actions, objects, and ephemeral installations.
