“Total” is Dietmar Brehm’s first-ever Super 8 short film, and it arose from happenstance. When the artist unpacked his camera, there was already a film cartridge inside—so when Brehm pulled the trigger, he shot a sequence of frames that shows a split-second image of a tree. In Brehm’s customary manner, the film begins with a green head leader and ends with the red tail leader, with the countdown at the beginning followed by a white, non-exposed section. This conceptually stringent work was Brehm’s filmic debut in 1974 and would be followed by a wide range of experimental works in the same medium. W.S.
