Lois Weinberger’s focus on nature and its entanglements with culture is visible in his “Herbarium” series from Japan in which he analyzed the daily overflow of images seen in advertising, electronic media, and the public realm. From a visit to Aji Island, located just off the Oshika Peninsula to the southwest, and on the occasion of the “Reborn Art Festival” with its 2019 theme of “Next Utopia”, Weinberger collected plants and then brought together over 20 magazines, scanning their many pages of advertising and attaching the dried plants to these scans in order to create an assemblage of sorts. In this, the plants mounted on the multi-colored pages with their overload of graphic information all but disappear. W.S.
