Lois Weinberger’s transference of natural components into an artistic context was always done with an ironic twist that alludes to the language of art while taking inspiration from situations in the wild. And it is thus that “Beautiful,” which appears to be an abstract watercolor composition, in fact consists of otter droppings that the artist collected and fixed on paper. The pictorial landscape thus created embodies a cumulation of animal excrement that is impossible to recognize for what it is at first glance, instead being taken for ink or paint. It is ultimately explained, however, in the artist’s statement on the work. W.S.
