Cartography

In a number of drawings and paintings, Lois Weinberger combines forms of representation connoted with mapping and planning with verbal language, the distinction between drawing and painting being somewhat arbitrary since oil paint and ink are also used for drawing purposes… While ground plans do not depict landscapes, cities and buildings the way they appear in reality, they do allow a glimpse into their overall contexts and internal functional references. They expose the otherwise invisible grammar of what is shown and, as pictorial control systems, serve a dual function as written language and image. R.F.
