Skyscraper for birds
/1
The eradication of nature by civilization is a peril that has accompanied humankind ever since it began its conquest of natural resources. In the process, flora and fauna have been tamed in order to intervene in the natural cycle of evolution. “Skyscraper for Birds” is Lois Weinberger’s ironic take on this phenomenon via the model of an aviary. The artist proceeded by assembling several birdcages in different colors to create a two-meter-tall “apartment block” for birds; he then attached this object to the trunk of a tree, thereby creating a caricature-like juxtaposition of the laws of nature with notions about urban development and its spread.
