In 1988, I began to plant a 600 m2 area of a former garden that was as a ruderal landscape with so-called “bad soil.” To the extent that plants failed to colonize the open space on their own, I looked for wild plants that grew around town and transferred them to my fairly empty plot. I brought these plants there from vacant spaces like roadsides and abandoned quarries. At the same time, I took plants from my plot and released them in the city. Plant transfer, fieldwork: a garden as cell, storage, and distributor. The plant is a living being that touches on all flexible systems of life. L.W.
