Paths
/1
For this work from his “Paths” series, Lois Weinberger sketched out animal trails in nature and transformed them by way of painterly abstraction into patterns that might also relate to plants and the structure of leaves. These works, which amount to the subversive conquest of the picture surface, took on various shapes and developed in various ways as murals in exhibition contexts such as Frac Alsace or S.M.A.K. in Ghent, thereby transcending the boundaries between art, culture, and those representational structures that have for centuries been present in the pictorial landscapes of realist painting. What’s more, the juxtaposition of zoological and botanical configurations further mirrors the way in which these works oscillate between nature and culture. W.S.
