Laubreise. Draft for the Venice Biennial 2008
/1
The installation "Laubreise" (a poetic word in German that should not be translated, it exemplifies the consistently poetic thinking that the Weinbergers exercise in their art) specially conceived for the location, the Giardini della Biennale, adopts the typology of the pavilion in this particular context. The architecture that has been erected here, a 'second pavilion', was created for an object normally found outdoors in a natural setting, a compost heap. In this housing it has been made into a precise piece of sculpture that combines minimalist aesthetics with monumentality. The mound first becomes monumental by virtue of the space into which it has been placed and which provides physical boundaries—the apparently merely technical transferral of an everyday object, for precisely therein lies the weight of the symbolic process that the work Laubreise triggers off and that is suggested, albeit in German, by the title.
