In the video “Why are you lying to me?” Alina Kleytman wears a leopard print bathrobe and a white wig that match her long, white fingernails. With one fingernail, she reaches out for a tiny white ball of wool underneath the washing machine, which she then deposits in a side pocket of her bathrobe. Towards the end of this brief clip, she starts screaming to a dark-haired woman whose head she bangs against the white bathroom tiles. One can see the other woman’s tangled hair, but not her face. Kleytman, in her white wig, screams out “Why are you lying to me?”—which triggers a dialogue with her inner self, where loathing and hatred are mixed with anger and fear. The white bathroom’s sterility undermines the coldness that can be keenly felt in this eruptive moment. W.S.
