Although he uses words and letters, abandoning traditional models and means of textual communication, Attila Csernik deprives his visual objects of the imperatives of the semantic and display. By locating holes in language, by using the procedure of de(con)struction and decomposition, Csernik explores language’s visual conditions and properties. The artist hence has no ambition to tell us anything—he just acts, does something with language. In his work, elements of signification (letters) become mere environmental facts. Installing them in (urban) landscapes or—by contrast—within museum/gallery systems, Csernik also uses his objects to challenge/create (conceptual) misunderstandings. The essential point of such misunderstandings is to highlight the fact that in this world where Csernik acts as an artist, understanding is sometimes impossible and frequently even unnecessary. N.M.
