Here, Jiří Valoch’s conceptual poetry is returning to a denotational function of language. A common attribute of his works is a certain method of semiotic complication and denotational tautology. He is concerned with transformations of the perception of words due to the intervention of color and the ways in which the visual appearance of a statement changes its meaning in the minds of those who perceive it.
Many of Valoch’s works are dedicated to his long-term partner Gerta Pospíšilová (1918–1994). Pospíšilová, who was a translator, spent the 1970–1975 period as interim director of the Brno House of Arts, where she began as a secretary in 1954. Serving as its director during the era of normalization, she helped to procure many progressive exhibitions curated by Jiří Valoch. These efforts included realization of the one-day exhibition “White Space in White Space” (Miloš Laky, Ján Zavarský, Stano Filko, 18. February 1974, Brno House of Arts). J.P.
