50 x 50 mm projekt
/1
This photograph, which Miloš Laky, Jan Zavárský, and Stano Filko contributed to Jiří Valoch’s participative project “50 x 50 mm,” refers to the installation “White Space in White Space,” which the three artists prepared for presentation on 18 February 1974. Jiří Valoch helped pave the way for the latter project by producing a catalog and enabling the three artists to realize a secret unofficial exhibition at the Brno House of Arts (together with its former director and Valoch’s long-term partner Gerta Pospíšilová [1918–1994]), which took place on one day only and outside of that institution’s official exhibiting schedule. Nearly 100 artists were involved in Valoch’s project “50 x 50 mm,” with contributions including utopian propositions for a land-art piece sent by figures including Sol Lewitt, Bernar Venet, Christo, Marko Pogačnik, David Nez, Werner Kalkmann, and Horst Bartnig. Fragmentary documentation of the overall project can be found in Jiří Valoch’s archive at the Moravian Gallery in Brno. The paradoxical nature of this project combined a maximalist vision of land art with minimalist execution, which Valoch then developed further. J.P.
