your shit - your responsibility

The final work ŠKART that can be situated in the 1990s was presented at the third edition of Manifesta, the European Biennial of Contemporary Art, which was held in Ljubljana in 2000. This contribution, entitled “Your Shit Your Responsibility”, consisted of a large edition of small paper flags that were distributed for use as markers for dog poop in the streets—or for marking anything else as “shit”, for that matter. The slogan was rather ambivalent and could be extended to various usages, identifications, and ideological affiliations. In the catalogue of the show, and in contrast to the wordiness of other artists’ pages, their page contained just a few “sentences” consisting only of dashes, commas, and dots. Here, the sense of a withdrawal from the standards of contemporary art presentations is manifested once again. As early as 1993, they had published their first “catalogue” as a notebook with empty pages. Their early poster entitled “Important” consisted only of one dot. They termed this and other such reductions “The Songs that Ran Away.” B.D.
