Dalibor Chatrný’s 25 self-published volumes from the 1969–73 period—created in reaction to the limited possibilities in terms of exhibiting and publishing in the wake of the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968—document the conceptualization and dematerialization of Chatrný’s work at that time. Each of these A5-format works, designed with a cover and containing loose sheets, was produced in small numbers by Chatrný’s brother Ivan on the offset printer of the School of Arts and Crafts in Brno. Each focused on resolving a particular riddle. “Fragments of Spaces,” consisting of eleven sheets, modifies the perspectival representation of space by means of drawn interventions in a model interior, giving rise to physically impossible variants.
