O.T. (aus der Serie "Sticken")

The center of the picture contains a fragment from a photo by Maria Hahnenkamp of a woman who is almost entirely covered in a white veil; it is only in outlines that one recognizes her forearm and her hand. Hahnenkamp augmented this photographic fragment by a broad mat made of thick cardboard in order to begin precisely with the convention of framing that determines this picture as a symbolic form. She covers half of the mat with a stitched ornament, which she then continues as an embroidered one on the photographic paper. The “image body” of the female figure, which is only seen as the smallest of excerpts, is subjected by this “framing” to a multi-layered, strict, and at the same time disciplining ordering principle which it seems to submit to and at the same time escape from.
