Partum began painting while still in Poland, yet it was only after his move to Denmark in 1984 that painting became his main activity. The artist used stolen car paints as well as varnish, painting on canvases or boards as well as on various objects that he frequently adapted for the purpose with his own hands. These works were a logical extension of his poetry and likewise employed words and abstract forms. Painting partly abstract forms and word combinations was how he realized his “Poetry of the Universal Record”—an artistic communication system liberated from the rule of meaning. D.M.
