The “Polished Aluminum Object,” created in 1968, is one of David Nez’s early attempts at mixed media art. This piece also marks one of his initial efforts to break away from the traditional academic framework taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana, from which he graduated four years later. He began by creating objects, to be followed later on by environments and installations.¹ The polished surface of this object reflects the environment in which it is placed. It was first exhibited concurrently with Milenko Matanović’s circular paintings in Zvezda Park, which is where the most notable OHO group project, entitled “Triglav,” also took place. The inspiration for this work came from the “hard-edge” geometric painting movement, which was prominent and widespread in the 1960s. The polished aluminum object was created using electrical tape to achieve straight lines and geometric shapes. This piece represents one of Nez’s first collaborations as a member of the OHO group.
