Border Line

Barbara Kozłowska worked on the “Borderline” project for most of her life. The eponymous line was created using cones of colored sand and then photographed. It was intended to divide the entire globe from east to west. The first version, realized in Siberia in 1967, was commented upon by the artist as follows: “The line is an idea, an artistic model of reality. It does not come into being as a specific object; it is a concept (of seeing).” The “Borderline” at Lake Baikal was the first stage of a long process. This project was also carried out in Poland, Malta and Scotland and California. The various stages were documented in an archive of the project containing drawings, texts, and photographs. Kozłowska viewed this activity as an extension of painterly practice in the wake of art’s dematerialization. D.M.
