Sanja Iveković’s series of five self-portraits shows the contours of the artist’s face in thick, black strokes with her hair—visible as one big splotch—given a different color in each drawing. The employed colors range from blond to brown and from orange to red and black. With each changing color, the face is drawn from a different angle while the nose extends down the face as a black stroke. Changing expressions allude to uncertain identity constellations. The issue of hairstyle and the problem of cultural identity have become important tropes in Iveković’s works over the decades, early examples of which are manifested here. While the minimalist lines and color accentuation are reminiscent of 1980s’ pop art, these drawings remain fragile in their outlines and in the gestures that they portray. W.S.
