Arrhythmia

“Arrhythmia” was a performance realized by Barbara Kozłowska at the Zakład nad Fosą Gallery in Wrocław in 1980. The artist, dressed in a blue suit with the red letters spelling the word LOVE positioned over her heart, placed herself in front of a white canvas. A person behind the canvas read out the names of different parts of the body from an anatomical atlas. Kozłowska wrote down these words on the canvas in relation to her own body. When the name “neck triangle” was read, the artist positioned cutout letters on the floor to form the term “Adam’s apple”. This performance was rooted in both of the artist’s main interests—the dematerialization of art and visual poetry—but also touched on gender identity. The title was also an allusion to her own heart ailment. D.M.
