“schlauch #1” (hose #1) and “schlauch #2” (hose #2) are two nearly identical sculptures within a numbered series. Each consists of a galvanized metal sheet out of which one long hose protrudes in a swinging gesture that leaves its end touching the floor. These works are reminiscent of elements that one might encounter at a filling station or in a harbor environment, and they incorporate materials normally used in a typically male-dominated working environment. As with many of Schmale’s sculptures, their true function remains unknown while their seemingly perfect surfaces may evoke a certain desire that triggers all manner of mental play concerning their visible reality.
