Roman Ondak’s performance “Crowd” is conceived to take place during an exhibition opening. It involves inviting between 100 and 200 volunteers to show up as a fake audience, making the exhibition seem like an outstanding and not-to-be-missed event. The invited volunteers are not necessarily part of the contemporary art scene or knowledgeable in this field, and they arrive prior to the opening with no idea of what to expect. The space is thus veritably flooded, with the volunteers entering all at once to mingle with the crowd for a few minutes before abandoning the space by walking out en masse. Roman Ondak thereby creates a situation, first realized at the exhibiting venue of the Kölnischer Kunstverein in 2004, in which both the active “invaders” and the irritated opening visitors became protagonists of the performance.
