Goran Đorđević’s “Short Films” are in line with avant-garde filmmaking aesthetics of the 1970s in that they embody short takes of the scrutinized subject or object. With a Super 8 camera and near-still shots, the artist focuses on his surroundings and provides a title for each and every chapter. The eight shorts are listed as: “Little House,” “Green Grass,” “Open Book” (Dialectics of Nature),” “Blue Sky,” “Tape Recorder,” “Family Photo,” “Self-Portrait,” and “Art Is Illusion.” The content of the films ranges from mundane observations to conceptually driven statements coupled with minimal aesthetics in a modernist vein. The only two films with obvious movement show a walk through grass and an analog tape recorder in motion. Towards the end of the series, Đorđević films himself in a motionless state, while the final take shows the handwritten sentence “Umjetnost je iluzija” [Art Is illusion]. In this, the artist defies any attributions regarding what art is, can be, or has to be. W.S.
