This work by Mark Verlan presents a densely populated scene in which human bodies, architectural fragments, and animal forms are brought together by way of meticulous linear drawing. A solitary figure perched atop a monumental cornice surveys a compressed gathering below in which bodies overlap, support, restrain, and cling to one another. At the right, a large, horned, animal-like creature embraces a smaller figure, introducing the hybrid imagery that would become central to Verlan’s visual vocabulary later on. The classical architectural element appears damaged and eroded, creating a striking contrast between monumentality and physical instability. The absence of a clear narrative transforms the gathering into an ambiguous allegory. Elements of the grotesque, the theatrical, and the fantastical coexist in a world where ordinary reality continually gives way to transformation and absurdity. W.S.
