Flaka Haliti’s photo installation “Chain Reaction” shows 39 photos mounted on a light box. These photographs show boys lining up on a diving platform, waiting to plunge into the pool. The blue sky and the cloud hint at a perfect summer idyll, though a closer look reveals that the diving platform consists only of a simple metal construction. As one of the foremost woman artists from Kosovo, Haliti uses these scenes in her country to exemplify the male domain of brotherhood or companionship, expressed here through sports; on a wider level, though, she characterizes mechanisms that exist within most societies, not only in that of Kosovo. Male bonding can be viewed as a general political gesture that begins at a very early age with sports. Haliti illustrates this phenomenon through the repetitive actions of this intimate group of people and the sequence of the mounted photographs. W.S.
