The body as medium of expression is a restricted code because society exercises control over the individual via the body, body control hence becoming social control. The distinction between bodily expression in animals and humans is therefore an ideological axiom of social control. Departures from socially sanctioned body movements are therefore punished, but here an ocean stretches out before us. Body language rises up to become body song when the so-called "natural" bodily sounds that society tells us we must always suppress are declared as being human. What is natural body and what is cultural body, what is cultural expression and what is animalistic? Is there even such a thing as natural bodily behavior? Trance, ecstasy - who and what is expressed here, which body? Between formal and informal bodily behavior, between the questions posed above - this is where the expressive movements in my piece "Restricted Code" take place. V.E.
