Daniela Hammer-Tugendhat

Daniela Hammer-Tugendhat, Vienna, 21 February 2023

“Good artworks usually depict contradictions.”

It’s with justifiable frequency that Daniela Hammer-Tugendhat (author of “The Visible and the Invisible”) is hailed as “a pioneer of feminist art historiography.” She has introduced countless young people to painting and to art in general by way of her initially simple-seeming invitation to gather some initial impressions without any prior knowledge, describe THESE impressions, and then verify them in light of the respective artworks. In this conversation, Hammer-Tugendhat—with an eye to topics including current debates on the culture of memorialization and remembrance—formulates an appeal for vital political and social debate situated beyond the “cancel culture” of which there is currently so much talk.
