Since the 1960s, Jiří Valoch has repeatedly engaged with visual poetry as a curator, as well, being regarded as a pioneer in the field of curatorship in the context of Czech art scene. Valoch’s most significant curatorial works are “Tool etc.” (realized in the surroundings of the Vysočina Gallery in Jihlava in 1969, co-curated together with Ugo Carrega) and “Visual Texts” (Labyrinth Gallery, Lublin; Dom Srodowisk Twórczych, Łódź, 1976, co-curated together with Józef Robakowski and Henryk P. Sobczak).
The aim of the exhibition “Tool etc.” was to present the works of Italian representatives of the Poesia Visiva movement. Alongside photographic documentation, typewriters, and drawings, this exhibition also included the books that Pedrottia and Sarenca published in their joint edition Amodulo. This exhibition’s catalog also contains a definition of the term “semantic complication,” which was brought to the field of visual poetry by Ugo Carrega and corresponds with Valoch’s term “non-verbal semantic texts,” meaning the intervention of color in a single word or a recurrent triad of words.
